The Series: Purdue leads 49-25
The Rankings: Purdue is ranked No. 14 in the Associated Press Poll and No. 11 in the USA Today Division I Coaches' Polls. Indiana is unranked.
Indiana (10-10, 1-6) suffered a 53-39 loss at Northwestern on Monday. Indiana has lost five straight games, with the last win coming against the Wildcats, 68-64 on Jan. 6 in Assembly Hall. Senior forward Aulani Sinclair leads the Hoosiers at 17.1 ppg, while senior guard Jasmine McGhee is tops in rebounding with an average of 6.3 boards per game. Curt Miller is in his first year at Indiana after leading Bowling Green for 11 seasons. The Hoosiers average a conference-low 56.2 points per game, but rank No. 4 in the league in scoring defense by holding opponents to an average of 57.8 ppg. Indiana is the only team in the conference that has not allowed an opponent to score 70 points in a game this season.
This is the 75th meeting between Purdue and Indiana in women's basketball and the first of the season. Purdue holds a 49-25 series advantage, including a 17-3 mark in the last 20 matchups. The Boilermakers currently have a seven-game win streak against the Hoosiers.
Last Time vs. Indiana
Brittany Rayburn scored 24 points to lead No. 22 Purdue to a 90-58 victory over Indiana on senior day in Mackey Arena. KK Houser had 15 points and seven assists for the Boilermakers, Alex Guyton scored 11 and Sam Ostarello added nine rebounds. Rayburn hit four three-pointers. Sasha Chaplin led the Hoosiers with 15 points. Aulani Sinclair scored 14 and Candyce Ussery a career-high 10. Purdue, which shot 48 percent, turned a 29-19 lead into a 41-19 edge with a 12-0 run late in the first half. It was not close thereafter. The Boilermakers forced 21 turnovers while committing only nine. Purdue extended its winning streak against Indiana to seven games and the Boilermakers won the Barn Burner Trophy for the third-consecutive season. Rayburn was named the Barn Burner Trophy game's Most Valuable Player.
Purdue vs. The Big Ten Conference
The Boilermakers are 401-219 all time against teams in the Big Ten Conference, including 346-171 in league games. Purdue has a winning record against every conference opponent except Ohio State (27-40, .403). The Boilermakers have the highest winning percentage vs. Michigan (49-15, .766), followed by Illinois (49-16, .753) and Wisconsin (44-17, .721). Purdue is 40-17 (.702) versus the Gophers, 44-19 (.698) against Northwestern, 2-1 (.667) when playing Nebraska, 49-25 (.662) when taking on instate rival Indiana and 26-16 (.619) against Penn State. Purdue is 37-26 (.587) versus Michigan State and holds a 35-27 (.565) record versus Iowa.
The Boilermakers will travel to University Park, Pa., for a showdown against Big Ten leader, Penn State in a Big Monday game Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2. It is the only matchup in the regular season between the two teams. Purdue has a bye on Feb. 7 before playing host to Michigan on Feb. 10 at noon in Mackey Arena. That game is the designated National Women and Girls and Sport Day with a free pregame sports clinic in Lambert Fieldhouse.
Last Time Out
Drey Mingo recorded a season-high 22 points and 10 rebounds to help No. 15 Purdue defeated No. 25 Michigan State 67-62 in overtime on Sunday. It's the fourth overtime win for the Boilermakers without a loss in Big Ten play. KK Houser scored 16 points and also had a career-high 10 rebounds for Purdue. Taylor Manuel scored 12 points, hitting 4-of-5 from the field and all four free throws. Kiana Johnson led Michigan State with 19 points. Becca Mills scored 11 points and Jasmine Thomas scored 10 for the Spartans. In overtime, Purdue held Michigan State to three points. The Spartans made just 1 of 11 shots in the extra period. Mingo's basket with 31 seconds left in regulation tied the game at 59. Her layup 50 seconds into overtime gave the Boilermakers the lead for good. Neither team led by more than eight points in a game that had nine ties and seven lead changes.
Mingo Finalist for Wooden Citizenship Cup
Sixth-year senior Drey Mingo is one of the five finalists in the collegiate division for the 2013 Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup. She becomes the second Purdue women's basketball player to be recognized by the Wooden Citizenship Cup committee; Lauren Mioton was a finalist in 2009. This year's award recipient will be announced at a ceremony April 23 in Atlanta. Mingo is Purdue's second leading scorer and second leading rebounder, averaging 12.5 points and 6.4 points this season.
With the 67-62 overtime win at Michigan State, Purdue has tied the school record for overtime games and for the first time in school history is 4-0 in those contests. With the victory, head coach Sharon Versyp improved to 9-4 in extra sessions at Purdue, including leading the Boilermakers to five-straight overtime wins dating back to the Big Ten Tournament championship game against Nebraska, a double-overtime thriller. This season, the Boilermakers have outscored opponents 52-36 in the extra periods.
Manuel Picks Up Second Freshman of Week
Freshman Taylor Manuel was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the second time on Jan. 29 after averaging 14.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists while shooting 71 percent from the floor in Purdue's two wins. Manuel tied her career high with 16 points in 17 minutes in the 77-73 win over Northwestern on Jan. 24. She followed that up with 12 points, three assists, four rebounds, a block and a steal in the Boilermakers' overtime victory at Michigan State on Sunday, the first Purdue win in the Breslin Center since 2007. On the season, Manuel leads Purdue in field goal percentage, having hit 60-of-106 shots for 56.6 percent. She is averaging 8.1 points and 3.0 rebounds on the year. Manuel also was awarded the weekly honor on Dec. 10 and is the first Boilermaker to earn multiple Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors since Courtney Moses was tabbed six times in 2010-11.
Three times this year Purdue has had two players record double-doubles in the same game. Most recently, Drey Mingo (22p/10r) and KK Houser (16p/10r) tallied double-doubles at Michigan State. Mingo and Sam Ostarello have recorded double-doubles in the same game twice this season: vs. Bowling Green and at UT Martin.
