WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Boilermakers led for all of two seconds in Sunday's game against Wisconsin, but it was all they needed.
Purdue got down 16-6 to start the game, trailed by nine at halftime and never lead until Chelsea Jones hit the game-winning shot from the right baseline with two seconds on the clock. It was the first game-winning shot of her career and the 6-foot-4 sophomore finished the contest with eight points.
Brittany Rayburn led Purdue with 19 points, two assists, one steal and one rebound. KK Houser followed Rayburn with 10 points, two steals and two rebounds. Alex Guyton tied her career-high for points with eight.
Senior FahKara Malone recorded six points, four rebounds, six assists and three steals in a clutch performance that was also a record setter. With her second theft of the afternoon, Malone surpassed two-time All-American Katie Douglas' mark of 327 career steals to hold the school record with 329. With a breakaway layup in the final minutes of the game, Malone brought her career point total to 1,000. She is the 25th Boilermaker to earn this distinction, and the layup that set the mark tied the score at 53-53 with 2:59 to play. The Evansville, Ind., native's six assists came versus zero turnovers and pushed her season assist total to 101, the fourth year in a row that she has dished out 100 or more assists.
Purdue trailed by as many as 11 points but clawed its way back to keep its conference home record unblemished. The Boilermakers managed two ties late in the game, the first by Malone and the second on a deep three-pointer by Rayburn with 57 seconds remaining. Wisconsin's Taylor Wurtz missed a three-pointer on the ensuing possession. Malone secured the rebound and took 28 seconds off the clock before driving to the basket. Wisconsin's leading scorer, Alyssa Karel blocked Malone's shot and caught the ball, but traveled before she could call timeout to maintain possession. The Boilermakers executed their out of bounds play successfully, resulting in the game winner by Jones.
The win is Purdue's 22nd consecutive against Wisconsin in West Lafayette, and with Penn State's loss to Ohio State puts the Boilermakers alone in second place in the Big Ten standings.
Purdue will travel to Columbus, Ohio, to take on conference-leading Ohio State on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. ET on the Big Ten Network.
