White a Preseason Candidate for 1998 Naismith Award
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue junior guard Stephanie White has been named one of 20 preseason candidates for the 1998 Naismith College Player-of-the-Year. It marks the second straight year White has been selected for the honor.
A 5-foot-11 guard from West Lebanon, Ind., White averaged 16.4 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game last season en route to being named second team All-Big Ten. She ranked fourth in the Big Ten in free throw percentage (80.7), fourth in assists (4.9) and eighth in scoring (17.2) in conference games. White was named Academic All-Big Ten and Academic All-District V and received Purdue's Coaches' Award (tremendous character, heart and work ethic).
On the Boilermakers' career lists, White ranks second in free throw percentage (77.7), fifth in three-point field goals (76), fifth in three-point field goal percentage (34.5), tied for fifth in points per game (13.5), eighth in assists (262) and 19th in points (796).
This past summer White was a member of the silver-medal winning USA Jones Cup team in Taiwan. She averaged 10.3 points (second on team), 3.4 assists (tops on team), 3.0 rebounds (fifth on team) and 2.4 steals (tops on team).
The Naismith Player-of-the-Year Award is presented by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.
