Purdue's Peck Named as an Assistant for 1997 USA Jones Cup Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Duke University head women's basketball coach Gail Goestenkors was named today by USA basketball as head coach of the 1997 USA R. William Jones Cup Team and replaces previsouly announced Jones Cup head mentor June Daugherty of the University of Washington who recently withdrew due to personal reasons. USA Basketball aslo announced that Purdue University's Carolyn Peck and University of Oregon's Jody Runge will serve as assistant coaches for the U.S. squad. The coaching selections were made by the USA Basketball Women's Select Team Committee chaired by East Carolina University (N.C.) head coach Anne Donovan.

The 1997 R. William Jones Cup competition is scheduled to be held August 9-16 in Taipei, Taiwan. The '97 USA Women's Jones Cup and World University Games will be selected following the USA Women's Team Trials that will be held August 1-4 in Colorado Springs, Colo. Compiling a 9-0 record to capture the gold medal at the 1996 Jones Cup competition. The U.S. women have an all-time Jones Cup tournament record of 98-22 and have captured 13 medals in 16 trips to the Jones Cup, including seven gold, two silver and four bronze medals.

Peck, who was an assistant coach at Purdue for one season (1997) before recently being named Purdue's sixth head coach on April 1, tackles her first assistant coaching position for USA Basketball this summer. This past season, Peck aided Nell Fortner, current USA National Team Program head coach, and the Boilermakers to a 17-11 overall record and a share of the Big Ten Conference regular season title with a 12-4 conference finish. Purdue then advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament before falling in overtime to eventual NCAA runner-up Old Dominion University (Va.).

Peck served her first two years (1994-95) on the sidelines as an assistant coach to Pat Summitt and the University of Tennessee Lad Vols. During her two seasons at Tennessee, the Lady Vols finished as the 1995 NCAA national champion runner-up, advanced to the 1994 Sweet 16, captured two Southeastern Conference (SEC) titles and compiled a 65-5 record. In each of Peck's seasons, Tennessee earned the SEC championship with unblemished 11-0 conference records. Following her two seasons at Tennessee, Peck spent one year (1996) as an assistant coach at the University of Kentucky. All told, teams with Peck as a member of the coaching staff have compiled a 90-35 record for a .720 winning percentage.
