Five Grapplers Signed for 2014-15

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue head wrestling coach Scott Hinkel secured five new additions for the 2014-15 Purdue wrestling team with Peter Andreotti, Jacob Aven, Mario Leveille, Austin McCloskey and Ben Thornton signing National Letters of Intent.

Thornton is a three-time Division I Wisconsin High School state finalist for La Crosse Central in La Crosse, Wis. As a sophomore, he captured the 106-pound title with a spotless 49-0 record. In the midst of his title run, Thornton won 98 consecutive matches, spanning from his 2011 103-pound finals appearance to the 2013 finals at 113 pounds. The projected 125/33 pounder for the Boilermakers entered his final season with a record of 146-2.

Indiana natives McCloskey and Aven are projected to be 165/74 and 197-pounders, respectively. McCloskey, who hails from Western Boone High School in Thorntown, placed second at 160 pounds as a junior. He was dealt a 2-1 tiebreaker decision to future teammate Riley McClurg. McCloskey sported a 112-10 mark prior to his senior campaign. Aven advanced to the IHSAA State Finals at 220 pounds a season ago and finished with a record of 33-9.

Andreotti and Leveille will come to Purdue via Marist High School in Chicago, Ill., one of the nation's high school powerhouse programs, which is listed 17th in the latest Intermat rankings. Andreotti, who is projected to wrestle at 165 pounds, is a two-time Illinois High School placewinner. As a sophomore he placed sixth at 152 pounds and followed with a fifth-place finish at 160 pounds last year. Leveille qualified for state at 120 pounds in 2012 and at 132 as a junior. He is projected to be a 141/49-pounder as a Boilermaker.
