WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - After spending the first six weeks of the season on the road, the 19th-ranked Purdue wrestling team will be in action on Monday at Holloway Gymnasium. The Boilermakers will take on a pair of opponents, SIU Edwardsville at 3 p.m. ET, followed by No. 23 Central Michigan. SIU Edwardsville (1-2, 0-0 SoCon) and CMU (2-3, 1-0 MAC) are set to square off at 1 p.m.
Purdue carries a 3-0 mark into its home opener, with all three duals coming at the Journeymen/MyHouse Northeast Duals on Nov. 11. The Boilermakers are seeking their 11th straight win over the Cougars in the seventh consecutive season the two teams have met.
The Chippewas are making their first trip to West Lafayette since Feb. 22, 1997, but it has only been two years since they last faced Purdue. On a neutral mat at the Eastern Michigan Duals on Nov. 7, 2015, Central Michigan edged the Boilermakers 18-16, making the all-time series 7-5 in Purdue's favor.
BOILER NOTES
After spending three weeks at No. 20 on the USA Today/NWCA Coaches Poll, Purdue improved one spot to No. 19 ... it's the highest ranking of the season and the fifth consecutive week the Boilermakers have been listed among the top 25.
The No. 19 ranking ties the highest ranking the program has had under Coach Ersland ... during the 2015-16 season Purdue was listed 19th from Dec. 15 to Jan. 5.
The Boilermakers' lineup boasts three nationally ranked wrestlers for the first time since Dec. 21, 2015, when Alex Griffin was No. 17 at 149, Doug Welch was No. 20 at 157 and Chad Welch was No. 6 at 165.
Chad Welch was the last nationally ranked 174-pounder for Purdue (3/3/2015) ... the last nationally ranked heavyweight was Roger Vukobratovich on Jan. 30, 2012.
Head coach Tony Ersland has started 3-0 in three of his four seasons at the helm ... the win over No. 22 North Carolina at the Journeymen/MyHouse Northeast Duals marked the sixth time an unranked Ersland-coached squad has upset a nationally ranked opponent.
