Dec. 1, 2004
Each week throughout the 2004-2005 wrestling season, one wrestler will be chosen at random to answer 10 equally random questions developed by Purdue's Sports Information office. This week's random wrestler is true freshman 157-pounder Colton Salazar, interviewed by student assistant Erin Myers.
1. What are your feelings going into the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational this weekend?
I feel good going into the tournament. I'm hoping to improve; this is a big tournament, and I'm excited.
2. I know you went to the same high school as Cael Sanderson and that you were coached by Cael's dad, Steve. Was there a lot of hype back home with Cael's national and worldwide success?
Yeah, our town really was right behind him the whole way. Our school is in a big wrestling town, and it was a really big deal when he won the NCAAs four times and then won the Olympics.
2b. I also heard you were friends with Cael's brother, Cyler ... is that true?
Yeah, we were best friends all through high school.
3. I know you're of the Mormon faith ... do you know where you're going to go or what you're going to do for your two-year church mission?
I get my call in March that will tell me where I'm going. I'll probably leave in early June, and I'll be gone for the next two school years. I'm really excited.
4. I know that you like to play guitar ... how long have you been playing?
I've been playing acoustic guitar for a year.
4b. Is there a particular artist that has inspired you?
I like Blink 182 and those kinds of musicians.
5. You're in aviation ... do you already know who you want to fly for when you get out of school?
Usually you get on with a regional airline then you move up to a major airline. I kind of want to get on with Delta because they have a big base in Salt Lake City and I can move home.
6. What did you do for Thanksgiving? Did you get to eat?
I went to my buddy Nick Spohn's house and ate a lot of turkey, but now I'm regretting it.
7. You refer to yourself as "often ambidextrous" ... what exactly do you mean by "often"?
I'm kind of weird, I guess. I golf left-handed, but I putt right-handed. Also most things that I do underhanded, I do with my right hand, and most things I do overhand, I use my left hand.
8. What is your favorite home-cooked meal?
Oh man ... I love homemade fettucine alfredo.
9. I hear that you have a motorcycle ... what kind do you have?
A 2002 Honda Shadow.
9b. So on "American Chopper," what was your favorite motorcycle that the Teutels have created?
The Spider-bike. It was one that they made for the Spiderman movie.
10. I know wrestlers occasionally get teased for their lovely spandex singlets, but what is the best comment you've ever received?
I have a cute butt, I've been told.
