WEST LAFAYETTE - The Purdue wrestling team will host the preseason Gold & Black Duals on Saturday, Oct. 27, at noon in the Blake Wrestling Center in Lambert Fieldhouse. The event will feature the wrestle-off finals for all 10 of the Boilermakers' starting jobs and the public is welcome to attend, free of charge.
"Wrestle-offs are a fantastic tradition of our sport and I think the new way we plan to showcase our team will be great for Purdue and our fans," said head coach Scott Hinkel. "In the past we've hosted an entire afternoon of matches, but they haven't been the most organized events. We think this something our fans can get behind and be excited about for years to come."
Competition started on Tuesday and Wednesday, paring each of the Boilermakers' 10 weight classes down to a final two to wrestle Saturday. Some highlights of the week included a thrilling 6-3 victory by sophomore Nick Lawrence over sixth-year Jake Fleckenstein at 141 pounds, sophomore Pat Robinson's 4-3 win over freshman Doug Welch at 165 pounds and freshman Dion Crowder with a 6-4 sudden victory over fellow rookie Luke Schmit at 174. The Boilermakers' also saw bonus-point wins from freshmen Chad Welch and Kyle Ayersman, who won matching 8-0 major decisions at 174 and 125 pounds, respectively.
Saturday's action will begin at noon and should last for approximately two hours. Seating is first come, first served, and space is limited in the Boilermakers' practice facility.
