CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Purdue wrestling team was recognized as one of six finalists for the 2013 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) and Elite Level Sports Marketing (ELSM) annual Gold Standard Best of Brand Award on Thursday. The award is recognized as the highest honor in the Best of Brand program as it works to highlight the college programs that have set a unique standard in marketing their programs in an innovative manner.
"We're honored to be recognized as one of the top wrestling programs in the country from a social media standpoint," said Boilermaker head coach Scott Hinkel. "Our staff and team work very hard to spread a positive and promotional message about our team on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and other social networks. To see that effort recognized in this fashion is a testament to our staff and our wrestlers."
The Boilermakers have one of the largest social media followings nationwide in wrestling, earning more than 2,800 "likes" on Facebook and nearly 4,300 followers on Twitter, in addition to logging more than 49,000 views on YouTube in the last year. The "Boilermaker Technique of the Week" and "Friday's With Lauren" were staples of the social media programming, including a guest appearance from Purdue Pete, while their "Duck Call" Commercial for their Feb. 11, 2013 dual against archrival Indiana featured a guest appearance by Associate Athletics Director Calvin Williams.
Hinkel has been on board with the Boilermakers' social media efforts from day one, garnering over 1,100 followers on his own personal Twitter account, in addition to encouraging assistant coaches Chris Fleeger and Pete Rogers to join the Twitter ranks as well and rack up another 600 combined followers.
Other finalists for the award are Drexel, Iowa State, Maryland, North Carolina State and Chattanooga. The winners of the Best of Brand awards will be announced Saturday, August 3rd at the breakfast session at the NWCA Convention.
The Gold Standard Award falls under the umbrella of Annual Achievement awards, designed to recognize the programs that used social media in the best possible manner to market themselves during the season. The subset contains three awards: Top Newcomer, The Gold Standard and The Masterful Mission, all seeking out the program with the best consistently built brand.
The Best of Brand Awards were founded by ELSM CEO Coyte Cooper with the NWCA following the 2011-2012 season, and after a widely successful inaugural year returned for a second year.
