June 7, 2018

Christian Brunner led the way among a regiment of Purdue wrestlers at the U23 Freestyle World Team Trials by placing fourth at 92 kg on June 3. Dylan Lydy wrestled his way into the quarterfinals at 79 kg, but was unable to come through wrestlebacks, exiting one match shy of placing.

The massive two-day tournament utilized nearly 20 mats on the indoor football field of the Louis and Freda Stile Athletic Field House on the campus of the University of Akron on June 2 and 3. Six of the 10 weight classes ran 128-man brackets and three weights used 64-man brackets.

Nebraska’s Eric Schultz, an NCAA qualifier at 197 pounds, twice halted Brunner. After winning three straight to begin the tournament, Brunner was edged by the Husker 6-5 in the quarterfinals. The Purdue sophomore once again rattled off three straight victories, including a 12-6 win over 184-pound NCAA qualifier Greg Bulsak of Clarion RTC, to get into the third-place match of the 64-man bracket. Schultz once again denied Brunner, taking a 9-0 decision for third.

Brunner, a two-time NCAA qualifier, finished the weekend at 6-2 with a pair of shutouts and outscored his opponents 71-29. Three of his wins came in the opening period, featured by a 38-second 10-0 win over Anthony Mancini of Lancaster Alliance Wrestling.

Lydy won four matches, three by technical fall, to earn a spot in the quarterfinals of the 128-man bracket. Eventual 79 kg champion and Virginia Tech two-time 165-pound All-American David McFadden of SERTC-VT sent Lydy into the consolation bracket with a 10-0 (4:48) loss.

A controversial 18-11 loss to NCAA qualifier Te’Shan Campbell of Ohio State in Lydy’s first wrestleback match forced his exit.

The dozen Boilermakers that competed in Akron combined for 17 shutouts, with 16 coming in the first period and five in less than 60 seconds. Devin Schroder (57 kg) and Bjorn Schroeder (61 kg) each blanked three opponents in the opening frame.

Eight additional Purdue wrestlers competed at the U23 Freestyle World Team Trials: Alec White (65 kg), Patrick Cody (70 kg), Austin Singer (70 kg), Elijah Davis (74 kg), Cole Wysocki (74 kg), Tanner Webster (79 kg), Jared Florell (86 kg) and David Eli (92 kg).

Wrestlers must have been born between 1995 and 1999 to compete in the tournament. Champions of the 10 weights will represent the U.S. at the U23 World Championships, Nov. 12-18 in Bucharest, Romania.
