WR Secures Top-25 Signing Class

2017 signing class

May 12, 2017

Tony Ersland continues to build a new standard for Purdue wrestling. For a second consecutive year, the Boilermakers' head coach has secured a top-25 nationally ranked signing class. Ersland follows up his top-10 class from 2016 with a trio of the nation's top-100 recruits and a group that has combined to win four individual national championships and 11 state tournament titles.

"I thought we first and foremost met our weight class needs and got guys who continue to believe in what we are doing here at Purdue, where we are taking this program, what the expectations and goals are," Ersland said. "They are a group that is very much excited about the opportunity to compete for Big Ten and national championships. They embrace those expectations and the work ethic that is going to be needed to reach those goals."

Nationally the class checks in at No. 13 by FloWrestling, No. 18 by InterMat and No. 22 by TheOpenMat.com. The InterMat ranking is the third highest for Purdue with records dating to 2004. Ersland is credited with two of those top three recruiting classes: 2016 and 2017.

The Class of 2017 is Ersland's largest signing class yet with 11 wrestlers representing eight different states spanning from the east to west coasts. Their accomplishments speak for themselves, adding to Ersland's roster of highly decorated wrestlers, which will now feature seven top-100 recruits.

"I think this is a great class and I think it's about substance, that's where we want to go," Ersland said. "We've got a lot of substance with the hard work and the mentality that they'll bring in. They certainly have talent, we didn't sacrifice anything in the way of talent. We thought these guys really met our needs both from a mentality and work ethic stand point."
