  • WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Former Purdue wrestling standout Tim Dernlan was named the new head coach at Ashland University on Tuesday. Dernlan was a four-year letterwinner at Purdue from 1995-to-1998, and was an All-American for the Boilermakers in 1998.

A native of West Liberty, Ohio, Dernlan has moved about the collegiate coaching ranks since leaving Purdue, most recently serving as the recruiting coordinator and lead assistant at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. Before Lehigh Dernlan had coaching stints at Big Ten rivals Penn State University and Ohio State University as well as a year in West Lafayette. Over the last 10 years Dernlan has played a major role in some of the top recruiting classes in the nation, including the third best in the country in 2005 and 2006 at Penn State. He's also served as the owner and operator of Victory Wrestling Camps from 1998-2007, managing a budget of over $100,000 and coordinating and directing 14 camps at 12 locations throughout Ohio.

Dernlan still holds several marks in the Purdue record books, where he competed for four years at 118 pounds. His 104 career victories ranks ninth all-time, while his .722 winning percentage (104-40) is 14th. He's also tied for sixth in career back points with 203, stands ninth in career takedowns with 268 and ranks 18th in career falls with 14. His 1996 record of 29-6 is tied for the 16th-best single-season winning percentage (.829), setting single-season marks for takedowns and back points as well in 1996, amassing 97 and 69, respectively.

Derlan served as a two-time captain for the Boilermakers, sharing most outstanding wrestler honors with teammate Eric Douglas in 1998. He was also a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and with current Boilermaker head coach Scott Hinkel is one of just two wrestlers in school history to earned conference academic accolades and All-American honors in the same season.
