MADISON, Wis. - The official brackets for the 2014 Big Ten Wrestling Championships were released by the conference Friday, following the coaches review of the pre-seeds that were announced Monday. Danny Sabatello was the only one out of eight Purdue wrestlers to have their seed change as he moved up one spot to become the sixth seed at 141 pounds. Action from the Kohl Center will get underway Saturday at 10 a.m. CT.
As the No. 4 seeds, Cashé Quiroga (13-5) and Braden Atwood (23-7) received a first-round bye. Quiroga will face the winner of No. 5 Zane Richards of Illinois and No. 12 Garth Yenter of Michigan State in the 133-pound quarterfinals. At 197, Atwood's opponent will be the winner of a first round match between No. 5 Nathan Burak of Iowa and No. 12 Garret Goldman of Indiana.
Camden Eppert, who is seeded seventh at 125 and has a record of 14-11, opens against Minnesota's Sam Brancale (14-8). The senior Boilermaker posted a 5-2 decision when the two met in the dual on Nov. 22. Sabatello's move to No. 6 sets him up for a first round bout with Michigan State's Brian Gibbs (11-20). Sabatello (20-9) made easy work of Gibbs at the Michigan State Open on Nov. 9, scoring a 16-9 major decision over the Spartan.
Seeded eighth at 149, Brandon Nelsen's opponent will be Nick Trimble of Michigan State. Nelsen enters the tournament with a record of 14-12, while Trimble is 20-11. Redshirt freshman Alex Griffin (17-10), who is the No. 9 seed at 157, will square off against Michigan's eighth-seeded freshman Brian Murphy (14-5).
For a second straight year, Pat Robinson is set to meet Nebraska's Austin Wilson. Robinson owns a mark of 10-7 and is seeded ninth, while the Husker sophomore is seeded ninth and owns a record 19-11. Patrick Kissel (12-11) will get a rematch with Ohio State's Mark Martin (24-9) at 174. Martin, who is seeded sixth, edged Kissel 5-4 in the dual on Feb. 3.
Tanner Lynde (6-13) drew top-seeded Ed Ruth (25-1) of Penn State in the first round at 184 pounds. The two-time national champ scored a 13-3 major decision over the Purdue redshirt freshman on Jan. 12. Alex White (8-16) rounds out the Boilermakers' lineup as the 11th-seed at 285 pounds. He will take on sixth-seed Mike McClure (23-5) of Michigan State in the first round. The two collided at the Michigan State Open with McClure taking an 8-1 decision.
