Purdue Grapplers Find Open Tournament Success

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Numerous Purdue wrestlers were successful during the course of the open tournament season, competing in a dozen events throughout the Midwest. Boilermaker grapplers placed 44 times and brought home eight individual titles. Seven true freshmen got their first taste of collegiate competition while wrestling unattached.

Open tournaments that attached and unattached Purdue wrestlers competed in included: Michigan State Open Freshman/Sophomore Division, Eastern Michigan Open, Concordia University Wisconsin Open, Joe Parisi Open Gold Division and Freshman/Sophomore Division, Wisconsin Open, Cleveland State Open, Storm Open, Flash Flanagan Open, Purple Raider Open, Greyhound Open, Edinboro Open and Dubuque Open.

Individuals that competed in open events combined for a record of 218-103 (.679), including 77 bonus point victories. They pinned 39 opponents, recorded 26 major decisions and scored 12 technical falls.

Outside of the season opener at the Michigan State Open, seven attached wrestlers advanced to the finals nine times with a trio capturing titles. Nick Lawrence placed at all four opens that he attended, finishing as the 141-pound champ at the Storm Open hosted by Lake Erie College and the Dubuque Open hosted by the University of Dubuque. He placed third at the Wisconsin Open hosted by UW-Parkside and fifth at the Cleveland State Open. Lawrence has tallied an 18-7 record during his redshirt junior campaign.

The Storm Open also saw Cashé Quiroga capturing the 133-pound title and Alex Griffin taking first at 149 pounds, prior to his move to 157.

All seven of the true freshmen that wrestled unattached in an open tournament earned at least one podium finish. They placed a combined 28 times and brought home four titles.

Jacob Morrissey and Joshua Farrell were both seven-time placewinners. Morrissey was a two-time champ, winning the 174-pound titles at the Storm and Dubuque Opens. Farrell won the 157-pound Freshman/Sophomore title at the Michigan State Open. Also earning a title was 125-pounder Aaron Assad, taking first at the Purple Raider Open hosted by the University of Mount Union.
