WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -
The Purdue wrestling team heads into its final non-conference action this weekend before the impending Big Ten Dual season begins. The Boilermakers host the United States Air Force Academy on Friday before heading to Ashland, Ohio on Sunday for a trio of bouts at the Wendy's Duals.
The Old Gold and Black is 4-2 in dual competition on the season, riding a three-match win streak into the weekend. After a disappointing 1-2 start at the ACC/Big Ten Clash, Purdue bounced back to win its next three in a row, toppling Mount St. Joseph, 39-3, Rider, 24-18, and Drexel, 35-6. The Boilermakers also posted their highest finish in recent history at the Midlands Tournament, taking ninth place with 58 team points. Nineteenth-ranked junior 149-pound tri-captain Jake Patacsil has been red-hot as of late, winning seven of his last eight matches with five technical falls, a pin, a major decision and a second-place showing at the Midlands. He's also managed to tie Purdue's all-time back-point record, building his career total to 391 in just over two and a half seasons.
Fellow junior Nick Corpe and freshman A.J. Kissel have been impressive as well, anchoring the 174- and 184-pound weight classes for the Boilermakers. Corpe has a team-best 17-5 record and 52 takedowns on the year, while Kissel has pinned 11 opponents en route to a 15-7 mark. Corpe is on pace to climb the Purdue single-season leaderboard for takedowns, and Kissel's fall total is already tied for seventh on the Boilermakers' single-season list. Kissel needs just four more pins to tie the Purdue record of 15, set by Dave Lilovich in 1986.
The Boilermakers won their only match against Air Force in the schools' histories, taking a 37-6 victory over the Falcons at the Hawaii Duals in 1999. Purdue also boasts a 31-1 all-time record at the Wendy's Duals, dating back to 1995. Purdue has a 3-2 all-time record against Ashland, winning the three-straight heading into the weekend, and is 14-8-1 against Northern Illinois, coming off a 29-9 loss in 2004. Sunday's match against Liberty is the first ever between the two schools.

Air Force comes to West Lafayette at 1-3 on the season, fresh off their first win of the season. Last Saturday's 22-21 win at Adams State came on the strength of three forfeits by the host Grizzlies, while Air Force senior heavyweight Anthony Stegeman scored a major decision to lock up the victory for the Falcons. Stegeman is one of three standouts for Air Force, joined by freshman 133-pounder Derek Gillespie and junior 165-pounder Stephen Crozier. Friday's match is set for 6 p.m. (EST) and will be webcast live on Purdue All-Access at purduesports.com. The match has also been tabbed ROTC/Armed Forces Day by Purdue and veterans or any member of the military or ROTC may receive free admission (must show military ID or proof of service).
The host Eagles of Ashland, ranked eighth in the country at Division II, return home after a disappointing 0-2 mark at the Division II Cliff Keen National Duals last weekend, where they fell to Minnesota State-Moorehead and Mercyhurst. A trio of Ashland grapplers posted 2-0 marks despite the losses as freshmen Muhammad Abdur-Rahman and Travis Popham and junior Josh Ohl each grabbed a pair of victories. Abdur-Rahman is ranked fourth in Division II at 157 pounds and Ohl is fourth at 197 pounds.
Northern Illinois travels to Ohio University on Friday before heading to Ashland. At 4-1, the Huskies boast a win over Big Ten rival Northwestern, which they edged 22-19 in a showcase meet back in November. A pair of NIU grapplers have national distinction as 133-pound senior Pat Castillo is ranked 11th in the country, while 174-pound sophomore Duke Burk is 13th. Castillo stands at 14-5 overall with a team-high eight major decisions, and Burk is 13-3 overall with a 6-1 dual slate.
Purdue ends its three-match day in Ashland with Liberty, who enters the weekend 3-5-1 after an 18-18 draw with North Carolina State last Saturday. The Flames' lineup is led by junior 141-pound Tim Harner and sophomore heavyweight Patrick Walker. Harner is a 2007 NCAA qualifier and has a 17-9 record with four falls, while Walker is 16-8 overall with a 6-0 mark in dual competition. Walker has six pins to his credit and earned a nod to last season's national championships as well.
