Boilers Go 3-0 at Wendy's Duals
The 17th-ranked Purdue wrestling team upped its dual meet record to 10-1 with three victories at the Wendy's Duals in Ashland, Ohio, on Sunday. The Boilermakers lost only two matches the entire day, beating Kent State 39-0, Cleveland State 44-6 and Miami of Ohio 35-0. "Our guys wrestled as a team today," head coach Jessie Reyes said. "Our seniors led the way and helped us shutout two good teams." Purdue started the day with a 39-0 shutout over Kent State. Senior Tim Dernlan pinned Brent Thompson in 1:45 at 118 pounds to start the meet. Junior Willie Wineberg scored a technical fall with a 24-8 win over San Murdock at 142 pounds, while senior Davion Peterson defeated Cliff Andres 12-4 at 177 pounds. Junior David Pierce pinned Jeremy Orsky in 2:30 at heavyweight to finish off the Golden Flashes. The Boilermakers followed with a 44-6 win over Cleveland State. Sophomore Evan Robinson (126 pounds), senior James Crnich (167 pounds) and Wineberg each had pins for Purdue. Senior Mickey Griffin had a major decision over Josh Smith, 11-1 at 150 pounds. Dernlan and sophomore Scott Hines also had victories for the Boilers. Purdue ended the day with a 35-0 shutout over Miami of Ohio. Dernlan picked up his third win of the day with a 19-4 technical fall against Matt Dominique. Sophomore Eric Kerkhof had a major decision over Terry Wright, 14-5 at 134 pounds. Sophomore Jason Salley defeated Ryan Pallinger 9-7 in overtime at 190 pounds. The Boilers host Brown, Eastern Illinois, Northern Illinois and Wyoming in the Purdue Duals at the Intercollegiate Athletic Facility on Jan. 24.
