Purdue Wrestlers Pound Missouri
The 23rd-ranked Purdue wrestling team upped its dual meet record to 3-0 with a 23-12 victory over Missouri in Columbia, Mo., on Sunday. Purdue got a big lift from senior Davion Peterson late in the meet. Peterson defeated No. 15 Jason Moore 13-7 at 177 pounds. Junior Willie Wineberg boosted the Boilers with a major decision over Matt Webster 17-8. Wineberg, ranked sixth in the nation at 150 pounds, extended his record to 6-1 with the victory.
Senior Mickey Griffin also had a major decision for Purdue, defeating Clint Caton 10-2 at 158 pounds. Griffin is currently ranked seventh at 158. Other Boilermakers with victories were senior Tim Dernlan (No. 6 at 118 pounds) and juniors Josh Hutchens (134 pounds) and David Pierce (Hwt.).
"Missouri is a tough team, and they were very competitive," assistant coach Scott Hinkel said. "Everybody wrestled very aggressively for us, especially Wineberg and Griffin. Peterson wrestled extremely well and came through with a big win for to give us a spark. He had one of the best matches of the evening." The Boilers will compete in the Sunshine Open in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Dec. 28-29.
