LAS VEGAS - Purdue’s Danny Sabatello, Chad Welch and Braden Atwood advanced to the quarterfinals, while Camden Eppert and Brandon Nelsen, remain alive in the wrestlebacks of the 32nd Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Wrestling Invitational. After Friday’s first session in the Las Vegas Convention Center, the Boilermakers are 16th in the team standings with 18 points. Michigan leads with 37.5 points powered behind five quarterfinalists and three in the consolations. Northern Iowa is second with 36 points, followed Nebraska (35.5), Ohio State (32.5) and Cornell rounds out the top five with 32 points. Action resumes from the Las Vegas Convention Center at 6 p.m. PT.
Sabatello, seeded eighth at 141 pounds, racked up seven backpoints en route to a 14-8 win over Terrance McKinney of North Idaho in the first round. Escaping from Rutgers’ Tyson Dippery late in the third period secured his spot in the quarterfinals with a 7-5 decision. The 9-2 redshirt sophomore is set to battle top-seeded Logan Stieber of Ohio State.
A takedown with two seconds left in sudden victory lifted Welch past Arizona State’s Raymond Waters, 5-3, in the first round at 165 pounds. The two exchanged escapes to start the second and third periods for a 1-1 tie. Welch, who is seeded 11th, attacked and got a takedown, only to have the Sun Devil reverse him to even things once again at 3-3. The redshirt sophomore received a medical forfeit from sixth-seeded Chris Moon of Virginia Tech in the second round to push him into a quarterfinal match against third-seeded Daniel Yates of Michigan.
The No. 6-seed at 197, Atwood unleashed a flurry of takedowns and got the count on Western Wyoming’s Jorge Alatorre, building a 10-3 first period lead, before sticking him at 1:19. The pin is the third of the season for the redshirt junior and pushes his career total to 18, which is tied for 15th on Purdue’s all-time career falls list. He followed with a 4-1 decision against Michigan’s Christopher Heald courtesy of a takedown in the opening period, an escape to start the second and 1:10 worth of riding time. Atwood squares off against No. 3 Nick Heflin of Ohio State in the quarterfinals.
Eppert, the 11th seed at 125, opened by pinning Army’s Hunter Wood in 4:10, but suffered a 5-1 setback to Nick Roberts of Ohio State in the second round to drop into the consolation bracket. His match with Colorado State’s Eric Hughes was decided in the second period with an escape and a takedown en route to a 3-1 decision. The grind of wrestlebacks continues with Michael Hammel of Grand Canyon in the third round.
Nelsen received a bye in the first round at 149 for a second round match with seventh-seeded Ian Paddock of Ohio State. The 10th-seeded Boilermaker was dealt a 13-8 setback and fell into the wrestlebacks, where he posted a 4-3 decision over Brown’s Cortlandt Choate.
