Six Wrestlers Qualify for NCAA Championships

COLLEGE PARK, Pa. -- The Purdue wrestling team finished ninth at the Big Ten Championships at Penn State University qualifying six wrestlers for the NCAA Championships. Iowa won the Big Ten with 132.5 points followed by Penn State with 120.5 and Minnesota's 107.

Seniors Tim Dernlan, Davion Peterson, and Eric Douglas, and juniors David Pierce, Josh Hutchens, and Willie Wineberg all will wrestle March 19-21at the National Championships in Cleveland, Ohio by virtue of their performances this past weekend. At 118 lbs., Dernlan placed fourth in the tournament after finishing fifth in last year's Big Ten Competition.

After dropping his first match of the Championships, Hutchens came back to win his last four matches and finish third overall. At 126 lbs., the Claypool, Ind., native was seeded fourth going into the championships. He avenged his only loss of the tournament in the third place match defeating fifth seeded Pat McNamera of Michigan State, 2-0.

Junior Willie Wineberg finished in fifth place at 142 pounds after taking a 6-2 decision from sixth-seeded Malik Elliot of Northwestern.

Eric Douglas finished in fifth place at 158 pounds after defeating Ohio State's Dan DiCesare. The win followed a 5-2 decision that Douglas lost to eventual champion John Lange of Penn State. Davion Peterson grabbed seventh place at 177 pounds after an 8-5 decision over Joe Degain of Michigan. Heavyweight David Pierce finished in sixth place after dropping a 7-1 decision to Illinois Jo Roesler.
