Boilers Prepare for Big Ten Championships

No. 9 ranking is highest since 1990-91.

NATIONAL RANKINGS (NWCA): As a team, the Boilers are ranked ninth in the nation. The highest ranking ever by a Purdue team is eighth by the 1990-91 Boilermakers. Tim Dernlan is currently ranked eighth at 118 pounds, while Josh Hutchens is tenth at 126. Willie Wineberg is sixth at 142, and Mickey Griffin is 12th at 150.

UPCOMING ACTION: The Boilermakers travel to University Park, Pa., for the Big Ten Championships, hosted by Penn State.

BOILERS BEAT 24th-RANKED WILDCATS: Purdue picked up its 16th win of the season with a 24-13 victory over No. 24 Northwestern on Feb. 21.

Senior Tim Dernlan started the Boilers off with a 9-3 win over Dominic Caruso at 118 pounds. Junior Josh Hutchens followed with a close 2-1 victory over Micah Hey at 126. Junior Willie Wineberg and senior Eric Douglas were also picked up wins at 142 and 158, respectively.

Juniors James Crnich (167) and David Pierce (Hwt.) and senior Davion Peterson (177) were Purdue's other individual winners.

PURDUE FALLS TO NO. 4 MINNESOTA: The Boilers lost to No. 4 Minnesota 28-8 on Feb. 22.

Purdue got off to a fast start as Tim Dernlan defeated Brett Lawarence by technical fall in 6:21 at 118 pounds to give Purdue a 5-0 lead. Josh Hutchens followed with a 5-4 overtime win over Bart Golyer to increase the Boiler lead to 8-0.

The Golden Gophers answered with eight consecutive victories to shut down Purdue's attack and win 28-8.

The loss was only the third of the season for Purdue.
