No. 9 Purdue Wrestling Hosts Northwestern and Minnesota

Boilers look to stay on top this weekend.

DUAL MEET RECORD: Purdue is currently 15-2 overall, 5-1 Big Ten and 6-2 against ranked opponents.

NATIONAL RANKINGS (NWCA): As a team, the Boilers are ranked ninth in the nation. The highest ranking ever by a Purdue team is eighth by the 1990-91 Boilermakers. Tim Dernlan is currently ranked eighth at 118 pounds, while Josh Hutchens is ninth at 126. Willie Wineberg is sixth at 142. Eric Douglas and Mickey Griffin are both ranked 12th at 158 and 150, respectively.

UPCOMING ACTION: The Boilermakers host Northwestern at 2:00 p.m. on Feb. 21 and Minnesota at noon on Feb. 22. Both dual meets will take place in the Intercollegiate Athletic Facility. Purdue is 34-36-2 in the series with Northwestern and 7-25-2 against Minnesota.

BOILERS CRUSH HOOSIERS: Purdue destroyed Indiana 27-8 on Feb. 15 at Rensselaer High School. With Purdue trailing 3-0, JoshHutchens, ranked ninth in the nation at 126 pounds, pounded Brian Smiley 10-0. Indiana regained the lead with a win at 134, but the Boilermakers took over from there. Junior Willie Wineberg picked up a major decision with a 21-8 victory over Gabe Cook at 142 pounds. Seniors Mickey Griffin and Eric Douglas both followed with victories at 150 and 158, respectively. Crnich fell behind 5-2 to Butch Hildebrand at 167 pounds, but battled back to tie the score 7-7 and force an overtime period. Crnich scored a takedown in OT to defeat Hildebrand 9-7. Senior Davion Peterson followed with his first pin of the season, beating Josh Greenspan in 1:51. Senior David Pierce picked up a 14-4 major decision over Mike Dixon at heavyweight to give the Boilers a 27-8 win.
