Boilers Set for Intrastate Showdown

Purdue vs. Indiana Matchup

Feb. 13, 1998

The Purdue wrestling team takes its No. 9 ranking to Rennselaer this weekend for a dual meet with intrastate rival Indiana. The meet will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday at Rennselaer High School. The Boilers defeated No. 13 Michigan and No. 10 Michigan State last weekend to improve to 14-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference. Purdue's four Big Ten wins this season are the most by a Boilermaker team since 1992-93 when Purdue went 4-5 in the conference. The No. 9 ranking is the highest this season for Purdue. Three Boilermakers have achieved top-10 rankings. Senior Tim Dernlan is eighth at 118 pounds, while juniors Josh Hutchens (126 pounds) and Willie Wineberg (142 pounds) are ninth and sixth, respectively. Unranked senior Davion Peterson (177 pounds) is tied with junior heavyweight David Pierce for the team lead in wins with 21. Senior Eric Douglas holds a 20-4 record at 158 pounds. The key match-ups are at 150 and 167 pounds. Senior Mickey Griffin has bounced back from a slow start to post a 17-6 record. He will face Indiana's only 20-match winner, Kevin Stanley, at 150 pounds.

James Crnich will battle No. 11 Mike Powell of the Hoosiers at 167. Crnich is having a career year at 19-9, including a 3-2 Big Ten record. Powell is 9-3 in limited action this season. Indiana holds a 54-25-3 series advantage over the Boilermakers.
