WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team wrapped up play at the Notre Dame Tom Fallon Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
The Boilermakers struggled through the weekend, winning only seven singles matches and five doubles matches, but the play of freshmen doubles partners Kelubia Mabatah and Griffin Nienberg looked strong as they won all three of their matches. Mabatah and Nienberg defeated Joe Vallee and Danny Vidal of Ball State 8-6, Irackli Akhvlediani and Yuichi Uda of Notre Dame 8-1 and Elliott Bisnow and Brian Ko of Wisconsin 8-4.
Others winning doubles matches were the duo of senior Colin Foster and freshman Jose Fuenmayor who defeated Jose Perdermo and Patrick Thompson of Ball State 8-5. Junior Eric Hodgman and freshman P.J. Rose also won a doubles match by defeating Santiago Montoya and Sheeva Parbhu of Notre Dame 8-2.
Seven different Boilermakers looked strong in singles and gained some wins. Three freshmen in Rose, Zaske and Nienberg defeated opponents. Rose defeated Ko of Wisconsin 6-3, 6-2, Zaske defeated Steve Guntly of Wisconsin 6-4, 6-4 and Nienberg defeated Danny Vidal of Ball State 6-0, 2-6, 1-0 (10-1).
Upperclassmen winning singles matches were Foster who defeated Irackli Akhvlediani of Notre Dame 7-5, 6-2, and juniors Hodgman, Matt Zollman, and Jarred Leibner. Hodgman defeated Gian Hodgson of Wisconsin 6-2, 6-3, Zollman defeated Jose Perdermo of Ball State 6-2, 6-2 and Leibner defeated Steve Guntly of Wisconsin 6-3, 6-1.
