PARK RIDGE, Ill. - The Big Ten Conference hosted its annual tennis awards banquet on Thursday night and one Boilermaker was honored. Mark Kovacs picked up Second Team All-Big Ten as well as the team's Sportsmanship Award.
Kovacs was the team's top singles player for most of the season. Despite a tough record down the stretch, the sophomore was playing some of the best tennis of his career. Kovacs faced the nation's Nos. 6 and 7 players within a week. Though he dropped both, he took one to a tiebreak and the other went three sets. Kovacs also had some impressive wins during the season. He had four conference wins at the No. 1 singles spot. He also had an 8-3 record in conference doubles matches. Kovacs had two ranked singles wins on the year as he defeated the Nos. 88 and 107 ranked players in the country.
The Budapest, Hungary, native was named the team's Sportsmanship Award winner in part because of his attitude and desire to make himself and his team better. The sophomore played with great class on the court and carried himself in a similar manner off it.
