WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The 40th-ranked Purdue men's tennis team is set to play in the Hilton San Diego Mission Valley Spring Classic hosted by San Diego and San Diego State at the Barnes Tennis Center and San Diego Tennis & Racquet Club Thursday - Saturday. The 7-2, 1-1 Big Ten Boilermakers will first face No. 61 San Diego Thursday at 2 p.m. PT at the San Diego Tennis & Racquet Club.
The tournament features five additional nationally ranked teams in No. 28 Harvard (8-4), No. 32 Memphis (6-2), No. 43 Drake (11-5), No. 56 Princeton (9-5) and No. 73 Denver (6-5). Joining Purdue in the bottom half of the eight-team bracket is Denver and Harvard. Play for tournament format is set that doubles action will cease once the point has been decided and the match will stop once a team has reached four points.
The Boilermakers have been inactive since March 9 when they dropped a 5-2 match at then-No. 6 Illinois, which snapped a six-match winning streak. During the course of that streak, Purdue upset then-No. 24 Northwestern and despite the loss to the Fighting Illini, the Boilermakers leaped 14 spots in the March 11 edition of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Team Rankings to No. 40. They retained their position on the newest poll released Tuesday.
The No. 40 ranking is the program's highest since owning the No. 43 spot on the Jan. 13, 2003, edition of the team rankings. Records available indicate that Purdue's highest ranking came in the April 12, 2000, edition when the Boilermakers were ranked 33rd. The Boilermakers have been ranked 40th or better a dozen times dating back to the 1996 season.
Sophomore Mateus Silva and senior Aaron Dujovne are currently riding win streaks of six and five singles matches, respectively. Silva owns a team-best record of 7-1 playing at Nos. 5 and 6, while Dujovne is 6-1 with action coming at the Nos. 3 and 4 spots.
