WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 72 Purdue men’s tennis team (1-0) will hit the road for non-conference dual match at No. 62 Cornell (0-1) Saturday at 1 p.m. ET at the Reis Tennis Center.
The Boilermakers are coming off a 6- 1 season-opening win over Toledo for the second time in as many years on Monday. Aaron Dujovne and Mark Kovacs secured the doubles point for the Boilermakers with a 6-2 win over Garrett Cona and Nicky Wong in the No. 2 spot. They mirrored the No. 3 team of Diego Acosta and Mateus Silva's score against the Rocket tandem of Ben Brocker and Roberto Meza. They captured straight-set victories in four of five singles wins, limiting the Rockets to just six points.
Cornell enters Saturday’s match following a 4-3 setback to unranked Buffalo in its first dual on Jan. 19. Despite the loss, the previously unranked Big Red jumped into the ITA team rankings released Tuesday. The 40th-ranked doubles team of Sam Fleck and Chris Vrabel posted a 6-4 win, but Cornell fell at Nos. 2 and 3 to surrender the point.
It will be just the second time the two teams have met. The Big Red took a 4-3 dual match from Purdue at the Boise State Spring Break Classic in 2010.
The dual will feature the new, experimental formats decided upon by the ITA Division Operating Committee. The experimental format has singles and doubles playing to six games, but with tiebreakers at 5-all and no-ad scoring. All third sets for men's singles will be played out unless the team match is decided. All matches will be played under the "clinch-clinch" format and with no warm-up against opponents.
