Boilermaker Duo Falls in Regional Title Match

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -Cris James and Derek Myers, partners on Purdue's top doubles team, lost in the title match of the I.T.A./Rolex Regional Championship in Champaign, Ill., today. Purdue's top doubles team, ranked 13th nationally and seeded seventh in this tournament, fell to the top-seeded Pietrowski/Patterson team from Notre Dame 6-0, 1-6, 6-2 in the doubles championship match.

"Cris and Derek got off to a slow start," Purdue coach Tim Madden said. "They ended up getting so frustrated that they came back in the second set and just tore right through it. But then they got a little bit tight and lost a few key points, and that turned things around. It was a hard match to figure out. It was all about momentum. Unfortunately, the other team had it at the end."

James and Myers advanced to the title match after defeating Smith and Vizzone of Ball State 8-5 in the semifinals. The Boiler combo won four straight matches leading up to the championship match. "You really have to congratulate Cris and Derek on a great tournament," Madden said. "Every year they come to play, and they did a great job this year. It is really is a heart-breaker." Purdue's fall tennis season is now complete. The Boilers return to action Jan. 24-26 at the Big Ten Indoor Singles Championships in East Lansing, Mich.
