Boilermakers Advance at Regional Tournament

CHAMPAIGN, Ill.--Junior Jamie Gordon, along with the doubles team of juniors Cris James and Derek Myers, advanced to the fourth round of the I.T.A./Rolex Regional Tournament in today.

Gordon, Purdue's top singles player and the defending I.T.A/Rolex Regional champion, defeated Michigan's Jake Raiton 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 in the third round. Gordon, seeded seventh in this tournament and ranked 74th in the nation, will play 13th-seeded Oliver Freelove of Illinois at 9:30 tomorrow morning.

The 13th-ranked and second-seeded doubles team of James and Myers defeated Michigan's Raiton and Wright 8-4 in the third round, after beating Tranquada and Nowak of Depaul 8-6 in the second round. They will face Indiana's Lippitt and Held at 10 a.m. tomorrow.

Also at the regional tournament, freshman Jason Marshall advanced to the third round before dropping a three-set decision to Doug Bohaboy of Northwestern, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Myers, who also advanced to the third round of singles, lost in three sets to 14th-seeded Mark Loughrin of Wisconsin 6-3, 6-7, 6-4.

The doubles team of Gordon and Marshall defeated Iowa's Cleveland and Dunn 9-7 in the second round, before falling to the top-seeded Patterson/Pietrowski combo of Notre Dame.

Gordon and James and Myers are playing for an automatic berth into the I.T.A. National Indoor Championships, a collegiate grand slam tennis event held Feb. 5-8 in Dallas, Texas.
