Gordon, James And Myers Bow Out in Qualifying Round
Three Purdue netters came up short in their bid to advance to the main draw of the ITA All American Championships today (Oct. 14). In the collegiate grand slam tournament held in Austin, Texas, juniors Jamie Gordon, Cris James and Derek Myers all lost in the qualifying round of singles. Gordon fell to Gonzalo Corrales of Georgia 6-1, 6-1. Myers met a similar fate at the hands of Middle Tennessee State's Julius Roberts, dropping the match 6-1, 6-1. James lost to Ty Braswell of Florida State 6-3, 6-3.
Corrales, Roberts and Braswell come from highly ranked teams. Georgia was ranked fourth, Middle Tennessee State 18th and Florida State 32nd in the ITA preseason poll. Purdue received a ranking of 50th in the same poll.
James and Myers are not finished yet, however. Purdue's top doubles team, James and Myers received an automatic bid into the main draw and will begin play Oct. 16.
