WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Purdue men's tennis team dropped to 2-8 in conference play Friday, with its 4-3 loss to No. 49 Penn State. Halfway through singles, the Boilermakers led 3-1 outside at their Schwartz Tennis Center, but the team was unable to clinch the match against the Nittany Lions. The one-point loss is Purdue's fifth of the season.
In doubles, the Boilermakers picked up wins on courts one and three. No 75 Athell Bennett and Gergely Madarasz defeated Constant De La Basse and Gabriel Nemeth 6-4 at the first position, and Stephan Koenigsfest and Maksymilian Raupuk edged by Christos Antonopoulos and Matt Galush 7-6 (7-4) at the third. Meanwhile, Purdue's Mateo Julio and Dominik Sochurek fell 6-3 to Christian Lakoseliac and Ben Lieb on court two.
In singles, the Boilermakers' two seniors split their matches against Penn State. Renan Hanayama finished first, defeating Alp Sentay on court six, while No. 111 Madarasz failed to secure the dual, losing 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 on one.
Bennett accounted for Purdue's third point; the sophomore bested Antonopoulos 6-2, 6-3 at the fourth position.
Up next, the Boilermakers will close out the regular season in the same way that it started. Sunday's home doubleheader begins at noon ET and features No. 3 Ohio State and unranked Chicago State.
