ANN ARBOR, Mich. - For the third time in as many matches, the Purdue men's tennis team was dealt a setback as the 28th-ranked Boilermakers fell to No. 49 Michigan, 5-2, while playing outdoors at the Varsity Tennis Center Sunday. The two points came way of singles victories from Ricky Medinilla and Aaron Dujovne. Purdue wrapped up the regular season with a record of 15-6, 7-4 Big Ten, while the Wolverines closed out at 14-11, 6-5 Big Ten.
As it has happened in the three consecutive losses, the opponent won the best of three doubles battle to secure the pivotal point. Purdue's 85th-ranked tandem of Dujovne and Diego Acosta were upended in commanding fashion by Michigan's unranked pair of Shaun Bernstein and Kevin Wong, 8-3. The loss was Dujovne and Acosta's first while playing at No. 2 since April 6 as their record slid to 8-7.
The point was awarded to the Wolverines following No. 31 Barrett Franks and Alex Buzzi's 8-4 decision of No. 70 Medinilla and Szymon Tatarczyk. After winning seven straight, the Boilermaker duo is 1-4 in its last five matches for a mark of 8-4.
Michigan's dominating play carried over into singles. The Wolverines clinched the match by winning the first four singles matches (Nos. 3, 5, 1 and 6) before Purdue was able to get a point on the board.
Both of the Boilermakers' victories came by way of 10-point tiebreakers in lieu of a third match. In the No. 4 spot, Dujovne improved to 14-3 as he posted a 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (7) win over Vlad Stefan. Medinilla closed out the match with a come-from-behind 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (9) victory at No. 2. It was the 11th win for the freshman as he improved to 11-8.
Up next for the Purdue men's tennis team will be the Big Ten Tournament hosted by Michigan State April 24-27 in East Lansing, Mich. Details regarding the tournament can be found here.
