AMES, Ia.- Beginning the first day of a weekend road trip with a win is what the Purdue men's tennis team set out to do. They accomplished their goal. The Boilers topped Iowa 5-2 in Iowa City today and raised their Big Ten record to 5-2 on the year and 10-8 overall.
"I am very happy to get a decisive win, especially outdoors," Purdue coach Tim Madden said. "It's an valuable experience with the Big Ten tournament coming up."
Jamie Gordon is currently unbeaten in conference play and continued on this track by placing another check in the win column today. The junior defeated Ryan Johnstone in straight-sets 6-1, 6-1 and raised his perfect record to 7-0 in the Big Ten and 24-13 overall. Cris James (22-10, 5-2), the second of the Boilers' four juniors, was also victorious. The win came over Tyler Cleveland 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 1 singles position. "James came up big for us at the top," Madden said. "He had a decisive win over a very powerful player." Freshman Jason Marshall continued his winning ways with a No. 4 singles win over Girts Auskaps 6-2, 6-2. "He played the best tennis I've seen him play so far this year," Madden said. "He was in a zone!" Also tipping the scales in Purdue's favor was Cade Lutz. The junior picked up a straight-set victory over Jason Dunn 6-4, 6-2. "He had a real good game to drive Dunn crazy," Madden said. "He was very tenacious on his approach. It's good to see him doing well to round out our line-up." Purdue picked up the doubles point capturing two-of-three matches. James and classmate Derek Myers teamed up to defeat the Hawkeye top pair of Dunn and Ulf Gentler 9-7. The Boiler duo is currently ranked 39th in the nation according to Rolex Collegiate Tennis Rankings and post a record of 21-11 overall and 5-1 in league competition. The other doubles win for the Boilers came from Gordon and Marshall. The No. 2 duo beat Cleveland and Ben Bamsey 8-4. Purdue will continue its road trip in Minnesota. The Boilers are set to play at 6 p.m. on April 19 on the Gopher courts. (MORE)
