WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Two sweeps were completed at the Purdue Varsity Tennis Courts today when the Boilermaker men's tennis team defeated Ohio State 7-0 to win its second and final match of the weekend. Purdue, which beat Indiana 6-1 on April 10, improves to 9-8 overall and 4-2 in the Big Ten with the victory. Ohio State remains winless (0-9) in the conference. Once again, strong doubles play helped Purdue get off on the right foot. Juniors Cris James and Derek Myers, junior Jamie Gordon and freshman Jason Marshall and sophomore G.T. Cozad and freshman Dan Swan paired up to win all three doubles matches for Purdue, giving the Boilers thematch's first point.
The sweep continued in singles play, as the Boilermakers won all six singles matches. James, Gordon, Marshall, senior Steve Brizendine and sophomore Cade Lutz all won in straight sets, while Myers won a three-set affair over Ohio State's Scott Wiles. This was Purdue's last home match of the 1998 season. The Boilermakers have four Big Ten matches remaining in the regular season at Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan State and Michigan. Next up is the Hawkeyes on April 17, followed by the Golden Gophers on April 18.
