WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team got its fifth win of the season by defeating Louisville 5-2 at the Lafayette Sports Center today. The win improves the Boilermakers to 5-4 (1-1 Big Ten) in dual matches this season.
"We got down to business early and never let Louisville into the match," said Purdue coach Tim Madden. "The tone was definitely set in doubles, and we got very strong performances from top to bottom in singles, as well."
Purdue got on the board first by claiming the doubles point after winning all three doubles matches. The 22nd-ranked duo of juniors Cris James and Derek Myers won 8-4 over the Cardinals' Mather/Steel combo at the No. 1 position. Junior Jamie Gordon and freshman JasonMarshall combined for an 8-2 victory over the Kujundzic/McRae team at No. 2. Sophomore G.T. Cozad and rookie Dan Swan teamed up for an 8-5 win against Messerli and Robertson at the No. 3 slot. "We got a very strong performance from G.T. and Dan, which sparked our momentum," said Madden.
The Boilers took that momentum into singles, where they won four of six matches. James downed Robby Robertson 6-2, 6-2 for his eighth win of the season, and Myers picked up a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Chris Steel. Marshall won 6-3, 6-1 against Oliver Messerli, and Swan was a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 winner over Tvrtko Kujundzic. This was the Boilermakers' final match before they head west for a spring break trip to California. Purdue will face UC-Irvine (March 11), 12th-ranked Pepperdine (March 13) and 24th-ranked UC-Santa Barbara (March 14) in the Golden State.
