Two wins in one day. Not bad for the Purdue men's tennis team as it evened its record to 2-2 following decisive wins over Northern Illinois and Western Michigan today at the Lafayette Sports Center. "We needed a jump start and we definitely got that today," said Purdue coach Tim Madden. "This was timely for us because we start the Big Ten season with Wisconsin next Sunday and we needed to get the total team feeling heading into that. Our team energy and enthusiasm is what got us through a long day." Purdue's first match against the Huskies ended in a 7-0 decision favoring the Boilermakers. Purdue won the doubles point with victories by the teams of juniors Cris James and Derek Myers and junior Jamie Gordon and freshman Jason Marshall. The Boilers then went on to sweep all six singles matches. Gordon defeated Mattias Ardfelt 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 at the No. 1 slot. James knocked off Carl Bengtsson 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2. Myers won 6-3, 6-1 over Suhel Malhotra. Marshall and senior Steve Brizendine were straight-set winners, while junior Cade Lutz won 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 over Tyler Refling. In the nightcap, Purdue continued to roll. After claiming the doubles point on a 9-7 win by freshman Dan Swan and sophomore Tushaar Gautam, the Boilermakers won four of six singles matches for the 5-2 victory. James and Myers, who teamed up for another doubles win, both won their singles matches, as well. Marshall won his second singles match of the day at the No. 4 position, and Swan picked up a 6-4, 6-0 win over Kyle Gernhofer at the No. 5 position. "It was nice to get Dan Swan back into the singles lineup because I anticipate that he's going to be very valuable to us in that position in the future," said Madden. "Cris and Derek continue to lead the team in both doubles and singles." The Boilermakers' next match is Feb. 15 when they hosts the Badgers at 1 p.m.
