Men's Tennis Off to Illinois
Boilers look to improve on 2-1 conference record.

The Purdue men's tennis team will put its 7-7 overall record on the line when it travels to Champaign, Ill., to compete against sixth-ranked Illinois on April 8. The Boilers, 2-1 in Big Ten play, will send Chris James and Jamie Gordon to the nets as Purdue's top performers in '98. James, began his junior season in the No. 2 singles slot, but has dominated the Boiler lineup of late and holds a 2-1 record in conference competition. Gordon, James' classmate, is standing at 10-8 this spring and is coming off of a straight-set victory over Penn State's Colin Smeeton. Purdue won 5-of-6 singles matches over the Nittany Lions, including continued strong play from freshman Jason Marshall. In doubles action, the Boilers send James and junior Derek Myers to the court in the No. 1 spot. The duo is currently ranked 39th in the country according to the Rolex Collegiate Tennis rankings and has posted a perfect 1-0-conference record and an 11-5 overall spring record. Purdue will hit the nets at 2 p.m.
