WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Currently in Florida for their biennial winter training trip in Fort Lauderdale, the Purdue swim teams conclude their stay in the Sunshine State Friday with dual meet action against Florida Atlantic.
The Boilermakers have been training and working out at the Pine Crest School this week. Meanwhile, the Purdue divers are in Puerto Rico, training at the San Juan Natatorium. The divers will not be competing in Friday's 3 p.m. dual meet with Florida Atlantic.
The FAU Aquatics Center is currently under construction, moving the Purdue-FAU dual to Pine Crest this year. In seasons past, Florida Atlantic has hosted at least one multi-team meet in late December or early January to give the programs visiting Florida for their winter training trips an opportunity to compete. Denver, Florida Atlantic, Northern Arizona and Northwestern were originally scheduled to race in a Dec. 21 meet, but it was reorganized due to the pool construction at FAU. Denver and Florida Atlantic are expected to square off Wednesday, Dec. 19 and Northern Arizona and Northwestern are scheduled compete Thursday, Dec. 20.
The Boilermakers departed for Florida on Dec. 16 and 17 after completing their final exams on campus and wrapping up their fall semester commitments. They're scheduled to return to Indiana on Sunday, Dec. 23, many of the student-athletes heading home for the holidays from there.
The winter training camp is built on a combination of volume and intensity, and helps establish the foundation that will carry the Boilers through a busy competition schedule in the month of January and the upcoming championship season in February and March. With the student-athletes having completed their fall-semester academic course work, they're free to focus solely on training for nearly a month until classes resume on campus Jan. 14.
Along with the training and workouts at the pool, the winter trip also helps build camaraderie and team unity. The underclassmen are experiencing the winter training trip for the first time while the upperclassmen are there for the second time. Purdue also trained at Pine Crest from Dec. 29, 2010 through Jan. 8, 2011. The Boilermakers stay home and have their winter training camp at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center during seasons in which they don't travel.
Purdue competed against Brown, FAU, LSU and Penn at the 2011 Florida Atlantic Invitational in January 2011. Both Purdue teams went 4-0 in the head-to-head dual meet scoring.
The spring semester competition schedule begins the weekend of Jan. 11-13 with road trips to the state of Michigan. The Purdue men will take on both Michigan and Michigan State and the women go head-to-head against MSU. Big Ten rivals Indiana, Illinois (women), Minnesota and Wisconsin are also on the schedule before the Big Ten Championships in February.
