WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - A successful calendar year of competition for Purdue's Joe Cifelli comes to a close over the next week as he represents the Boilermakers in both 3-meter events at the USA Diving Winter National Championships.
Winter Nationals are set for Dec. 13 to 18 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, North Carolina. The 2015 NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships were held in the same natatorium.
Cifelli competes individually on 3-meter on Thursday. The top 12 in the semifinal advance to Saturday's 1 p.m. final. He'll team with University of Miami diver Briadam Herrera in Monday's synchronized 3-meter competition.
Additionally, Ben Bramley (Wellesley, Massachusetts), a National Letter of Intent signee for the Boilermakers this fall, is scheduled to compete on 3-meter and 10-meter at Winter Nationals.
Scores are cumulative and carry over from the prelim to the semi to the final in all events at Winter Nationals. There are 23 divers entered in the men's 3-meter prelim, with 18 advancing to the semifinal. All 12 divers entered in the men's platform field, including Bramley, will compete in the prelim, semi and final. Cifelli and Herrera among the seven synchro teams in the 3-meter field and are also guaranteed a spot in the final.
Earlier this year, Cifelli medaled at the USA Diving National Championships in Columbus, Ohio. He finished third on 3-meter at the Summer Nationals before representing the USA on 1-meter at the World University Games in Taipei later that month. He also placed fourth on 3-meter at USA Diving's World Championships Trials in May.
Along with competing on 1-meter at the World University Games, Cifelli and Herrera were also both All-Americans in the event at the 2017 NCAA Championships. Herrea was the Atlantic Coast Conference Diver of the Year as a junior and finished second to national champion Steele Johnson in the 3-meter final at NCAAs.
Cifelli was a finalist in both springboard events at the 2016 Winter Nationals, finishing seventh on 1-meter and ninth on 3-meter. He helped the Purdue divers win the team scoring titles in the men's and combined (men and women) categories.
The Purdue swimmers depart for their winter training trip in Hawaii on Dec. 17. The divers are slated to join their teammates in Honolulu on Dec. 26. The Boilermakers will be staying and training in Waikiki until Jan. 6. That upcoming extended trip coupled with Winter Nationals being held in North Carolina this year were the primary reasons why Cifelli was the only Purdue diver that opted to compete this year.
