WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Boilermaker diving won four of six events this weekend at the Ohio State Invitational. Senior Amanda Miller claimed the 1- and 3-meter springboard titles, while Steve LoBue won off the 1-meter and Danny Cox took first off the platform.
Miller won off the 3-meter on Friday with 325.75 points, then followed that performance Saturday with 293.30 points off the 1-meter. The senior from Centreville, Va., did not compete off the platform Sunday as she still recovers from surgery.
"We made the decision today to hold her off tower; we we're right on the fence," said Purdue diving coach Adam Soldati. "This was a great breakthrough meet for both her and the team. She's just getting back to full strength and it can be frustrating working through the time off and effects of surgery.
"Her scores certainly were not her best, but even when she has an average meet she can still win. Amanda displayed great consistency this weekend."
LoBue's winning 1-meter score was listed at 340.95 points, while the freshman Cox led the 16-man platform field with 339.85 points. Cox's classmate, J.P. Perez, also fared well off the tower with a fourth-place tally with 311.55 points, and LoBue was third with 317.15 points.
"We got some great results out of both our freshman; Danny showed great mental toughness and improved by about 70-points from his last time on the tower at Indiana," said Soldati. "I'm proud of how our guys did on the platform. They all beat a lot of good opponents; guys like Mickey Benedetti (Arizona State), who are winning medals at FINA meets."
In addition to the host Buckeyes and Sun Devils, the three-day meet also featured divers from Miami, Minnesota, South Carolina and Utah. Soldati called this meet his team's toughest of the season.
"This meet was a good glimpse of what we're going to see at the NCAAs. Ohio State is a powerhouse in the Big Ten, Arizona State is tops in the Pac-10 and Miami has always been a traditionally well-run program. It's not only nice to face quality opponents, but teams we're not used to seeing. We had a good mix."
This weekend's trip marked the second time Purdue diving had visited OSU's new McCorkle Aquatics Center, which Soldati believes will help his men's team in February at the Big Ten Championships.
"This place is quickly becoming a second home away from home. The guys are used to the boards and the facility itself, so there shouldn't be any surprises when we come back here," said the second-year mentor.
The divers next hop on a plane with the swimmers to Hawai'i for winter training, which will last from the end of December to the start of second semester. Purdue's men's first meet back in the lower 48 will be at Michigan on Jan. 12, while the women wait until Jan. 13 to take on Michigan State in East Lansing.
