WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Purdue swimming and diving teams will be participating in the second annual Breaststroke 4 Hope swim-a-thon, set for Saturday, Nov. 10 at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.
The fundraising event for breast cancer research, prevention and awareness has expanded this year and is expected to feature over 250 swimming participants. The lap swimming portion of the event is slated to begin at noon.
All members of the Purdue swimming and diving teams will be on hand, some to participate in the lap counts and others to provide tips and encouragement. The Boilermakers are idle from competition this weekend as they gear up for the Purdue Invitational, set for Nov. 16-18 at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.
Two-time U.S. Olympian Katie Hoff is scheduled to be the distinguished guest swimmer on hand Saturday. She won three medals at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, including silver in the 400-meter freestyle.
The masters program iSWIM and Purdue's Greek Life community will also be represented by a large contingent at the event. Admission to Saturday's Breaststroke 4 Hope is free. Participants are striving to raise money for breast cancer education and awareness, reaching out into their communities to collect lap pledges and flat donations for the cause. Donations will be accepted on site as well Saturday. The event collected over $10,000 in proceeds for the first Breaststroke 4 Hope held in January 2012.
Speedo's Breaststroke 4 Hope Collection also supports the cause. Pink and black are the primary color combinations throughout the line of swimming accessories and clothing, which will be on sale at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center Saturday. Attendees are encouraged to wear pink clothing to the event in recognition of breast cancer awareness.
Along with a large crowd of spectators expected, the atmosphere at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center Saturday is scheduled to include live local radio broadcasts, an on-site DJ, raffle prizes, food and refreshments. All attendees receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win a set of Beats by Dr. Dre high quality headphones donated to the Breaststroke 4 Hope cause.
