Dive-by-Dive Scoring: Friday | Saturday
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- After sweeping the diving events in his first collegiate weekend of competition, Purdue's Layne Rogers has been named the Big Ten Diver and Freshman of the Week for his four-victory weekend.
Rogers won the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions Friday evening against Miami (Ohio) and again Saturday afternoon at the six-team Indiana Intercollegiates. The West Lafayette native improved on his winning scores over the course of the weekend, scoring 354.08 (1-meter) and 357.30 (3-meter) on his six-dive lists Friday, and 368.45 (1-meter) and 381.45 (3-meter) Saturday.
The men's divers competed along with the women Friday evening in the season-opening meet at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center. The men's diving scores (30-6 Purdue) will carry over to the swimming portion of this Saturday's dual meet against the RedHawks in Oxford. Rogers accounted for 18 team points with his two individual diving victories Friday and 40 team points Saturday as the Purdue men won the Indiana Intercollegiates.
Fellow freshmen Nate Hopkins (200 freestyle), Danny Conway (100 breaststroke) and Collin Baker (200 IM) each won an event heat Saturday at the Indiana Intercollegiates. Many of the program's newcomers are looking to earn a place on the travel roster for the upcoming dual meets at Miami, Notre Dame and Northwestern.
Rogers joins Alec Back and Jamie Bissett as active Boilers to win Big Ten Diver of the Week honors. Guillermo Blanco and Bissett were also named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week last year. That honor was added to the conference's weekly awards program midway through the2011-12 season.
The swimming portion of the men's dual meet at Miami Saturday is set for 2 p.m. Rogers and the Purdue divers will compete again with the rest of the Purdue swimming and diving programs Friday, Nov. 2 at Notre Dame.
