ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Jamie Bissett's personal-best score while winning the 1-meter diving event at Friday's season-opening dual at Miami (Ohio) Friday has earned the junior Big Ten Diver the Week honors.
Bissett improved on his fifth-best 1-meter score (375.68) in program history when he won event by 46.74 points over second-place finisher Alec Back. Bissett also placed third behind Layne Rogers and Back in the 3-meter diving event Friday in Oxford.
In a rare occurrence, Bissett's 1-meter winning score was higher than Rogers' victorious mark from the 3-meter board (373.72) Friday. Back, Bissett and Rogers all posted NCAA Zone-qualifying scores in both diving events.
Bissett was recognized as the Big Ten Diver of the Week for the second time in his career. He was previously honored in January 2012 after sweeping the diving events in a home dual meet victory against Michigan State. Rogers was named Diver of the Week after the season-opening weekend a year ago, representing the Purdue men's last winner of the award.
Bissett, Rogers, Back and Sean Mokhtari helped the Boilers' divers open up a 32-6 scoring advantage that will carry over to the Purdue-Miami men's dual meet on Friday, Nov. 22 at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.
Bissett and the Purdue divers will be in action Saturday at noon when the Boilermakers host the annual Indiana Intercollegiates meet. Fourteen teams (men and women) representing eight colleges from around the state are expected to have athletes in attendance.
