Incoming Purdue freshman Vinny Donnelly won the 2009 USA Swimming 5K Open Water Grand Prix on Sunday at Angle Lake Park in SeaTac, Wash.

"Open water swimming is very important to Vinny," head coach Dan Ross said. "This win gives him more experience towards his goal of an open water berth for the USA in London (at the 2012 Summer Olympics)."

Donnelly's victory was a fitting end to his week of competition at the U.S. Open National Championships. The Tampa, Fla., native qualified for finals in three events throughout the week at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash., with the highlight being a sixth-place, 8:05.93 finish in the 800 freestyle Saturday night. Donnelly also took ninth in the 1,500 freestyle Tuesday with a 15:33.41 swim and won the C final in the 400 freestyle Thursday after stopping the clock in 3:56.23.

Donnelly and the rest of the 2009-10 Boilermakers are slated to report to campus over the next couple of weeks with the first day of classes scheduled for Aug. 24.
