WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Purdue swimming and diving teams, as well as 12 Boilers individually, have been recognized for their academic excellence during the 2012-13 school year by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.
The Purdue men and women were honored as Scholar All-America Teams for compiling team grade-point averages of 3.0 and better during the 2013 spring semester. The women posted a 3.33 team GPA while the men checked in at 3.14. Both programs have been recognized biannually regularly. The CSCAA released its fall semester Scholar All-America Teams in February.
Individually, swimmers and divers were recognized for having GPAs of 3.5 and better coupled with their accomplishments in the pool during the 2012-13 season. Jamie Bissett, Michelle Cabassol, Lauren Gustafson, Casey Matthews and Rhiannon Sheets garnered Scholar All-America honors for qualifying for the NCAA Championships as individuals.
Seven other swimmers were selected as Honorable Mention Scholar All-America performers. Those honorees earned GPAs of 3.5 and better while registering at least one NCAA provisional-qualifying B cut time during the season. Of those seven swimmers, Allie Davis, Matt Friede and Nika Carlina Petric also qualified for the national championship meet as part of Purdue relays.
Nine of the 12 Boilers recognized by the CSCAA were also Academic All-Big Ten honorees, including Distinguished Big Ten Scholars Alec LaMothe, Jacob McGough, Bissett, Gustafson, Matthews and Sheets. Freshmen are not eligible for the Academic All-Big Ten and Distinguished Big Ten Scholar lists but are eligible for the CSCAA Scholar All-America program.
Gustafson was among the most recognized student-athletes in all of Purdue athletics during the 2012-13 school year. She and LaMothe were selected as Purdue's inaugural recipients of the Big Ten postgraduate scholarships. Gustafson also received an NCAA postgraduate scholarship and was named First Team Academic All-America after previously being Academic All-District along with Bissett.
Matthews was the 3-meter diving national champion, claiming the first NCAA title in the history of the Purdue women's swimming and diving program. Cabassol was also a 3-meter All-American. Bissett (platform diving) and Friede (200 free relay) earned Honorable Mention All-American acclaim for the men.
Gustafson was recognized by the CSCAA for the third time as a Boilermaker while Friede and LaMothe made the list for the second time each.
