WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue will be represented by four divers at the 2017 FINA World Championships, with action beginning July 14 in Budapest, Hungary.
Current Boilermakers Steele Johnson and Brandon Loschiavo are among the 16 members of USA Diving that qualified for the premier international competition of the year. Johnson qualified individually on both 1-meter and 3-meter. He will also compete with Loschiavo in synchronized 10-meter after the new partnership led to a USA Diving national title in the event at the Synchronized National Championships in April.
Michael Hixon and Johnson are the only American divers to qualify for the World Championships in three different events this year. However, Johnson is the only member of Team USA to qualify in both a springboard and tower event. He did not compete individually on 10-meter at USA Diving's World Championship Trials in May.
Alumni Steven LoBue (2004-07) and Kyle Mitrione (2007-10) are also slated to compete in 27-meter high diving in Budapest. Fellow alum David Colturi (2008-10) will be serving as their coach. High diving was added to the FINA World Championships in 2013. LoBue will be competing at his third straight World Championships after winning silver at the FINA High Diving World Cup in Abu Dhabi in April. Colturi finished fourth in his World Championships debut three years ago. All three Boilermakers are members of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series.
A silver medalist in synchronized 10-meter at the 2016 Olympic Games, Johnson will be competing at his second FINA World Championships. He earned the right to compete individually for the first time this year. Along with winning silver together in Rio de Janeiro, David Boudia and Johnson also finished fifth in 10-meter synchro at the 2015 World Championships in Kazan, Russia.
Loschiavo will be making his debut at the FINA World Championships. As a freshman this year, he qualified for the NCAA Championships in all three diving events, earning All-American honors with a fourth-place finish on platform.
Thanks to Boudia's four career Olympic medals and four career silvers at the FINA World Championships, Purdue divers have medaled at the Olympics or Worlds in every year the events have been held dating back to 2009. Boudia won silver in synchronized 10-meter at the 2009 World Championships and individual silver on 10-meter in 2011, 2013 and 2015. He brought home a pair of medals from both the 2012 and 2016 Olympics.
