WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.- Selected members of the Purdue men's and women's swim teams travel to Columbus, Ohio, this weekend for the Ohio State Winter Invite, a meet scheduled to feature preliminary and finals heats as well as competitors from six universities.
The two-day meet at OSU's McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion features preliminaries Saturday at noon and Sunday at 10 a.m. The finals are set for 6 p.m. Saturday and 5 p.m. Sunday. All scoring will be conducted via an invitational format. No diving events are being contested this weekend.
Along with Ohio State and Purdue, men's swimmers from Eastern Michigan and Michigan are expected to compete. Women's competitors from Louisville and Penn State are also in the mix.
The Boilermakers will be making their second trip to Columbus this season, having concluded their fall competition schedules the opening weekend of December at the three-day Ohio State Invitational.
Both Purdue teams are expected to don their special high-speed suits in an effort to post personal season-best times. The taper-based training programs are also underway as the Boilers continue to prepare for the championship portion of their seasons. The Big Ten Championships are set for the weekends of Feb. 15-18 (women) and Feb. 22-25 (men) in Iowa City.
Feulner and Pashley were honored as the Big Ten Swimmers of the Week for their performances at the OSU Winter Invite a season ago.
Feulner swept the 50 and 100 freestyle sprints, winning both events with personal season-best times. In both cases, she improved on her time from a second-place showing at the morning preliminary.
Pashley also posted personal season-best times in the 100 and 200 free. He won the morning preliminary and finished second in the finals of the 100. His showing in the 200 was good for the third fastest time by a Boilermaker at the time a year ago. He also swam the leadoff leg on the 200 free relay team that finished second to Michigan by only seven hundredths of a second.
Roach also enjoyed a successful weekend in Columbus last season, sweeping the breaststroke events with personal season-best times.
Bandura (50 and 100 free, 200 IM), Farrell (50 free), Mahon (500 free) and Roeing (100 back and 200 back) are the other Boilers returning for the meet who were at their fastest at the OSU Winter Invite a year ago.
