Opening Night Results

MINNEAPOLIS - Individual victories by Jamie Bissett, Rhiannon Sheets and Ben Wachtel as well as the men's 200 medley relay team highlighted the opening night of competition Friday for Purdue swimming and diving at the two-day, seven-team Big Ten Quad, hosted by the University of Minnesota.

Wachtel won the 50 freestyle sprint and Bissett captured the 1-meter diving. Sheets touched first in the 200 butterfly.

Wachtel won with a personal season-best time of 20.25, an NCAA provisional qualifying mark, in an event that saw Boilers finish one, two and four. Danny Tucker took second and Matt Friede fourth.

Wachtel also contributed to the 200 medley relay win, swimming the butterfly leg. Brian Kiel, Lyam Dias and Ben Ziolkowski teamed with Wachtel to capture the opening event of the night.

Sheets posted her 11th individual victory of the season in the 200 fly. Teammate Lauren Roth took third in the same event. Emily Fogle (second in 100 breast) and Maddie Miskulin (second in 1-meter diving) also posted notable individual finishes for the women.

Bissett posted Purdue season-best scores in both the 1-meter (361) and 3-meter (381) diving. He won the 1-meter springboard competition by more than 10 points for his seventh victory of the season.

Brian Kiel (100 back) and Guillermo Blanco (200 IM) joined Tucker as members of the men's team that posted second-place finishes.

The Big Ten Quad concludes Saturday at 1 p.m.
