WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Freshman Romain Maire recieved his first Big Ten Swimmer of the Week honor Tuesday after winning five of six races against Eastern Michigan and Michigan State this past weekend.

Purdue easily defeated the Eagles and Spartans over consecutive days, lifting its dual-meet record to 9-0. The Boilermakers are currently ranked 16th in the latest College Swim Coaches Association of America pool, released Jan. 13.

Maire placed first in three events against EMU: the 400-yard individual medley, 200 freestyle relay, and the 100 backstroke. In his first collegiate 400 IM race, the Frenchman recorded the team's fastest time of the season at 3:55.23. His mark also ranks as the fifth best in school history.

The Dijon, France, native completed his weekend in East Lansing, collecting victories in the 200 back (1:49:30) and 200 free. His modest winning streak was snapped after placing second with the 400 free relay (3:06:65).

Maire is Purdue's sixth conference honoree this season, joining Carrie McCambridge, Christine Leupold, Jenae Gill, Josh Karshen and Steve LoBue. McCambridge, Karshen and LoBue all have been named Diver of the Week, while Leupold and Gill were voted Swimmer of the Week.

Purdue next competes Friday, Jan. 28th for the start of a two-day home triangular meet with No. 7 Minnesota and No. 17 Wisconsin. Friday's portion of the meet begins at 6 p.m., and resumes Saturday, Jan. 29 at noon.
