Seniors Deliver in Clutch as Boilers Remain Unbeaten

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue's men's swim team improved to 8-0 in dual meets this season with a 129-114 victory over Penn State Saturday afternoon at Lambert Pool.
The Boilermakers held a 116-110 advantage going into the final event, the 400 freestyle relay. Seniors Ross Croasdell and Mike Ullom, junior Kirk Larsen and sophomore Kevin Cornehl held off a pesky Penn State relay team and clinched the win for Purdue by posting a Lambert Pool record time of 3:03.09. Croasdell, one of five seniors swimming for the last time at Lambert Pool, also won the 500 freestyle (4:36.77) and the 200 freestyle (1:39.95). "I'm proud of these seniors," head coach Dan Ross said. "They all played a huge role in the win." Ullom had a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle (46.35).
Junior Vilmos Kovacs placed first in both the 200 breaststroke (2:03.81) and the 200 individual medley (1:50.35) and joined sophomore Gerald Koh and juniors Dan Kleber and Kirk Larsen on the victorious 400 medley relay team which also set a Lambert Pool record time (3:20.94). Koh also finished first in the 200 backstroke (1:52.13) while Larsen won the 100 freestyle (46.06) and Kleber won the 200 butterfly (1:50.02). Freshman Matt Martin chipped in a first-place finish in the 1650 freestyle (15:47.11).
Seniors Frank Smardo and Jason Ozias added third-place finishes in the 50 freestyle and 200 breaststroke, respectively. Cornehl, junior Ryan Morrissey and freshman Juan Rodela also added third place finishes in the win. Sophomore Brandon Gustafson placed fourth in both diving events, while junior Dan Schunk placed fifth. Purdue will next be in action against Northwestern and Michigan State, Saturday Jan. 24 at 1:00 p.m.
