Exhibition Leaves Boilermakers Ready for Season
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The men's and women's swim team kicked off the exhibition season Oct. 17 with the annual Gold and Black scrimmage. The intrasquad meet gives head coaches Dan Ross and Cathy Wright-Eger an opportunity to see how their experienced swimmers have developed and to evaluate the new freshmen.
On the men's side, Vilmos Kovacs won both the 200 individual medley (1:56.01) and the 200 breaststroke (2:05.00). Kovacs also joined junior Mark Kujawski and freshmen Ian Caswell and Matt Garrison to win the 400 medley relay.
In the men's 50 freestyle, Big 10 champion Frank Smardo edged out freshmen David Weis and senior Mike Ullom with a time of 21.61.
Sophomore Kevin Cornehl finished first in the 200 backstroke (1:58.62) and junior Kirk Larsen took the honors in the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.49. Freshmen Matt Martin also looked impressive by touching first in both the 500 and 1000 freestyle.
On the women's side, Marisa Watts won the 200 individual medley (2:11.82), the 500 and 1000 freestyle. Erika Whyte won the women's 50 freestyle with a time of 24.70, just ahead of sophomore Nikki Lively. Junior Tracy Storrier won the 200 breast (2:27.98)
Freshmen Gyongyver Lakos and Missy Bromley looked impressive in their first collegiate action by finishing 1-2 in both the 100 and 200 freestyle.
In the diving competition, sophomore Brandon Gustafson finished with 223.72 points for the men and Suzanne Barkey had 163.05 for the women.
The women will be in action October 24 in Bloomington against Indiana and Ball State. The men will return to action October 31 in an exhibition meet against Vincennes.Women's Swimming Link
